Summer can be a challenging time for jobseekers. While other people appear to be slowing down, taking holidays, enjoying the sunshine, or spending more time with family, you may still feel stuck in a cycle of applications, interviews and uncertainty about the future. It can feel difficult to truly relax when your mind is constantly asking questions like, “When will my job opportunity come?” or “What if nothing changes?”.
In seasons like this, rest can almost feel undeserved. Many people begin to believe they must constantly strive in order to prove they are being productive. But throughout the Bible, God never presents rest as laziness or weakness. In fact, rest is often where restoration begins. In fact, one of the most comforting invitations comes directly from Jesus:
Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28
That verse feels especially powerful for jobseekers because searching for work can become emotionally heavy. Rejection emails can quietly damage confidence, and silence after interviews can create anxiety. Watching others seemingly move forward in life can stir comparison and discouragement. Over time, many people carry stress so consistently that they forget what true peace even feels like.
Yet Jesus does not say, “Come to me once you’ve figured everything out”. He simply says, “Come to me”.
Resting in God does not mean giving up on your goals or becoming passive about your future. It means trusting that God is still working, even when nothing visible seems to be happening. Some of God’s greatest work happens beneath the surface, in seasons where growth feels invisible.
Summer provides a beautiful opportunity to intentionally reconnect with God in a slower and more personal way. Instead of only praying when anxiety rises, try creating daily moments to simply spend time with Him. Go for walks and talk honestly with God, trial sitting outside with your Bible and read slowly without rushing, and have a go at journaling your thoughts, fears, hopes, and prayers.
Sometimes we approach prayer only with urgency - asking God to fix problems immediately. But relationships grow deeper through consistency, not just crisis. God desires closeness with you, not only conversations built around requests.
Psalm 46:10 reminds us:
"Be still, and know that I am God!”
Stillness is difficult when your future feels uncertain. Our natural instinct is to panic, overthink, or constantly search for control. But stillness reminds us that God remains faithful even when we do not yet understand His timing.
It is possible that this summer is preparing you for what comes next. Perhaps God is rebuilding your confidence after disappointment. He may be creating space for healing before opening a new door.
There is also wisdom in allowing yourself to enjoy life while you wait. Summer can be a challenging time - watching friends or family travel on holiday, or others enjoying sunny weather outside. This can stir up emotions of jealousy or discouragement if you are carrying the weight of stress and worry while searching for a new job. Instead, choose to spend time with people you love. Get fresh air, exercise, and read. Explore hobbies you have neglected during stressful months. Sometimes jobseekers unintentionally place their entire lives on hold until employment arrives, but God never intended for your joy to disappear during seasons of waiting.
One of the most beautiful truths about faith is knowing that God sees the full picture when we can only see a small part. The opportunity you are praying for may take longer than expected, but God’s silence is not abandonment. He remains present in every unanswered question and every uncertain moment.
As you continue applying, preparing, and trusting Him this summer, remember that rest is not falling behind. Rest is allowing God to strengthen you for what is ahead. Even in the waiting, God is still leading you forward.
