For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10
Summer often brings a change of pace. The days feel longer, routines become less rigid, and many people find themselves with a little more flexibility than usual. Whether you're a student on break, taking a break between jobs, enjoying some annual leave, or simply experiencing a quieter moment in life, summer can provide something that often feels in short supply throughout the rest of the year: time.
When we find ourselves with spare time, it's natural to think about how we can use it for ourselves. We may plan holidays, tackle personal projects, spend time with family, or simply enjoy some much-needed rest. All of these things are valuable and important.
However, summer can also present a unique opportunity to look beyond ourselves and consider how we might serve others. In a culture that often encourages us to focus on personal achievement, comfort, and convenience, choosing to give our time away might not feel like a priority. Yet, in the Bible, we see that God frequently uses ordinary acts of service to make an extraordinary impact.
Many of us spend large portions of the year focused on our own responsibilities. Therefore, a quieter season can provide an opportunity to pause and ask a simple question: "Where could I be useful?".
Perhaps your local church needs additional volunteers during the summer months. Maybe a community group is looking for support with an event. There may be elderly neighbours who would appreciate practical help, or local charities that need extra hands during holiday periods when regular volunteers are away.
One reason people hesitate to volunteer or serve is because they believe they need significant amounts of time, money, or expertise to make a difference. In reality, some of the most impactful acts of service are surprisingly simple, and while these actions may seem small in isolation, collectively they can have a significant impact on people's lives.
Sometimes we underestimate what we can achieve. Summer can be a particularly busy period for many churches. Holiday clubs, outreach events, community activities, youth programmes, and special services often require additional volunteers and support. Yet many churches face the same challenge every year: a small number of people carrying a large amount of responsibility. If you do have extra time available this summer, consider whether there might be opportunities to support your local church in practical ways.
You do not need to be a preacher, worship leader, or ministry expert to contribute. Churches need people with all kinds of skills and abilities. Some people are gifted organisers. Others are welcoming hosts. Some excel at administration, while others simply bring encouragement and reliability. Every contribution matters.
Summer can also be an excellent time to support charitable causes through fundraising. Many people use the warmer months to take on challenges such as walks, runs, cycling events, or community activities that raise money for organisations making a difference in the lives of others.
Fundraising is not only about generating financial support. It is also about raising awareness and encouraging others to engage with important causes. Perhaps there is a mission organisation, local charity, food bank, or homelessness project that is close to your heart. A simple fundraiser could help provide resources while also creating opportunities for meaningful conversations.
You may be surprised by how willing people are to support a cause when they see genuine passion and purpose behind it.
While serving benefits others, it often changes us as well. Many people discover that volunteering brings unexpected perspective and gratitude. It can help us become more aware of the needs around us and less consumed by our own concerns. Serving reminds us that our value is not found solely in our job title or personal success - we were created for more than simply pursuing our own goals.
One of the easiest traps to fall into is waiting for the perfect opportunity to serve. We tell ourselves that we will volunteer once life becomes less busy, or we will get involved when we feel more confident or experienced.
Yet opportunities to serve rarely arrive at a perfect time. Often, the most meaningful acts of service begin with a simple willingness to say yes.
God can do remarkable things with people who are willing to step forward, even in small ways.
As you enjoy the summer months, take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy God's blessings. But also consider whether this season presents an opportunity to serve others in a fresh way. You may never fully know the impact a few hours of your time could have on someone else's life. What feels like a small act of service to you could become a significant answer to prayer for someone else.
As you move through this summer, ask God to show you where you can make a difference. You do not need to change the world overnight, but just simply be willing to serve where He places you. Remember:
Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.
