Acts Community Church is an independent, local church based in Tylorstown, a former mining community in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales. We are members of the Evangelical Alliance. We are an increasingly diverse congregation where families from the local area worship alongside those from many countries around the world.
Our vision is to see our community transformed one changed life at a time. We aim to love God, love people, serve God, serve people – to be ‘Love in Action’ to the people of Tylorstown, the Rhondda, Wales and through our partnerships with other churches, the rest of the UK and the world.
We began meeting in homes in January 2008. After this, we met in the local sports centre in Tylorstown, followed by the primary school hall and we are now in our own building, the former Tylorstown Workingmen’s Conservative Club (the Con). The building had been unused for some time when we purchased it. Through God’s grace and goodness we have been able to completely renovate the building – to be, we hope, a safe place, a welcome place, in the centre of our community.
The Acts name tries to capture who we are as a Church;
· A Church for Today’s Society
· To aim to be like the early church in the book of Acts in the Bible
· To demonstrate God’s love in practical ways through ‘acts’ of love and kindness
Some examples of our community projects include:
· Rhondda Foodbank, which we started in 2009 – the second Foodbank to open in Wales and through which we have helped to feed tens of thousands of local families. We are currently partnering with Trussell Trust and other local organisations and churches to try and tackle some of the root causes of poverty and to hopefully, one day, eliminate the need for Foodbanks altogether.
· Caffi Croeso@Acts – a community café which provides fresh, homemade food at affordable prices and a place where local people can meet for coffee, cake and chat.
· Warm Welcome – we have registered our building to be a warm welcome centre to help people cope with the current cost of living crisis.
· We have good links with local schools which we would like to grow. We want to develop children and young people’s groups both within the community and within the church. Similarly, we are hoping to support young adults and young parents.
