10 great interview tips for millennials

Many millennials are struggling to get the jobs they want because they have plenty of qualifications but lack experience. With so many people applying for each role, it can be tricky to get a foot in the door. But don’t give up hope; the right job is out there for you. These interview tips will help you make a good impression when the big day arrives.

1.       Dress appropriately

Money may be tight if you aren’t currently in employment, but buying smart interview apparel is an investment for the future. Make sure your clothing is clean, ironed and not too flashy. Ensure that you are well-groomed for the occasion.

2.       Be punctual

Prospective employers will not be impressed if you turn up late to your interview. If you are selling yourself as professional and organised, punctuality is key. Leave plenty of time to get there so you don’t appear flustered on arrival and have time to collect your thoughts before being called in.

3.       Take copies of your CV

You may find yourself facing an interview panel with only one copy of your CV between them. It will impress them if you are able to offer everyone a copy. Having your CV in front of you will also help to remind you of your skills and experience, which may become hazy when you’re under pressure.

4.       Do your homework

You already know what you have to offer, but what do you know about the company you are looking to join and the industry as a whole? Take a good look at the website and research the industry carefully. That way you will be able to demonstrate that you are a good fit and have put effort into preparing for your interview.

5.       Watch your body language

Your body language is just as important as your words. Plant your feet on the ground and hold your head level, as this will make you appear confident, grounded and in control. Maintain good eye contact and make it clear that you are listening carefully.

Asking intelligent questions will show that you have put thought into the interview process and are keen to learn. Find out about the team you would potentially be working with and what the company’s future aims are.

It’s important that you let your personality shine through. If you don’t, you will struggle to stand out from the crowd. It’s also important that you give interviewers an idea of your interests beyond the workplace.

It is very likely that interviewers will do some research on you, and this may include looking at your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. If you have overly personal information, inappropriate photos, extreme views or profanity on your profiles, this could really hamper your chances of getting the job. Make sure your LinkedIn profile matches with your CV so there are no gaps or discrepancies.

We all want to make a good impression in an interview situation, but make sure you sell yourself without sounding arrogant. Be specific about times when you have proven yourself in the workplace, at university or in your private life so that you don’t make any empty claims. Explain how you would use your skills and experience in this role if you were successful.

Whether you get the job or not, it’s important that you get some feedback. This will help you learn what you did well and what you can improve on in the future.
