Allowing Christ to Guide Your Career Move

Making a career move can be both exciting and uncertain. Perhaps you have been offered a new position, are considering a complete change of direction, thinking about starting your own business, or simply wondering what God has planned for the next part of your working life.

Whatever your circumstances, career decisions can bring plenty of questions. Is this the right opportunity? Should I stay where I am? Is God calling me somewhere new? How do I know whether I am making a decision based on faith rather than fear, ambition or financial security?

Our careers are not individual from our relationship with God, and so we are always able to ask Him these questions, when they arise. In fact, the workplace is a particular place where we can honour our faith by serving others and developing the gifts God has given us. That means we can comfortably invite Him into our career decisions rather than trying to work everything out on our own. He would encourage us to speak with Him whenever we have any uncertainty, in any area of our lives.

Start with God, not just the opportunity

When a new career opportunity appears, it can be tempting to immediately focus on the practical benefits. Perhaps the salary is better, the role sounds more exciting, or the company offers greater opportunities for progression. These things matter, and there is nothing wrong with considering them.

However, it's important to look beyond what appears attractive on the surface and ask God for wisdom. This is the safest way to know the path we are following is the correct one.

Before asking, “What can this opportunity do for me?”, perhaps we should also ask, “God, what do you want me to do?”

Prayer allows us to place our plans before God and surrender our own expectations. It reminds us that He sees the bigger picture when we cannot. We may only see the immediate opportunity, while God sees the journey ahead. Therefore, we are blind to the correct path if we take actions with contemplating and discussing with Him first.

Ask God to direct your given gifts

God has uniquely created each of us with different abilities, experiences, passions and opportunities.

So, your career does not have to look like someone else's for it to have purpose. Perhaps you are naturally gifted at leading people, or you have a talent for creativity, organisation, teaching, problem-solving or caring for others. Your skills can be used in many different environments, and your calling may develop over different phases of your life.

When considering a career move, take time to reflect on the gifts God has given you.

Ask yourself:

• What am I good at, and what do I enjoy doing?

• What kind of work allows me to serve or help others?

• Where can I use my abilities in a meaningful way?

• What prior experiences has God given me to prepare for this moment?

• Could this opportunity allow me to grow in a certain way, and what might God therefore be leading me towards?

Career guidance does not always come through a dramatic moment of revelation. Sometimes God guides us through the abilities, opportunities and experiences He has already placed in our lives. Take the time to reflect, see where he has placed you in the past, and consider how these experiences and gifts might be pointing you to something new in the future.

Don't allow fear or any other negative emotion to make the decision

One of the greatest challenges when making a career move is fear.

Fear of failure. Fear of financial uncertainty. Fear of leaving something familiar. Fear that we will make the wrong choice.

These concerns are understandable. But allowing fear to make our decisions can prevent us from stepping into opportunities God may be placing before us, or going against the path he is advising.

At the same time, trusting God does not mean acting recklessly. Faith and wisdom can work together. We can pray, research the opportunity, seek wise counsel, consider our responsibilities and think carefully about the potential consequences.

The goal is not to ignore practical wisdom. It is to bring our practical thinking under God's direction.

Seek God through the decision-making process

Sometimes we expect God's guidance to arrive as a clear and unmistakable answer. Yet often, discerning God's direction is a process. That process might include prayer, reading the Bible, speaking with mature Christians or elder family members, examining our motives, and patiently waiting for clarity. Listen to your thoughts, and be open to any signs which are provided to you.

It is worth asking whether our desire for a particular career move is driven by godly purpose or simply by comparison, status, money or recognition.

A new position may bring a larger salary but also require compromises that conflict with your values. Another opportunity may appear less impressive but provide greater opportunity to serve, grow and maintain healthy priorities.

There is no single formula for determining God's will for every career decision, but you must be open to hearing it.

Remember that your identity is in Christ

Perhaps one of the most important things to remember when considering a career change is that your job does not define your worth. The world can encourage us to measure success through job titles, salaries, promotions and achievements.

However, we know that our identity is found in Christ. Therefore, if you receive a promotion, you can thank God without believing that your new title makes you more valuable. If a job application is unsuccessful, you can experience disappointment without believing that you have failed as a person.

Always trust God with the next step

The Bible reminds us to seek God's will rather than relying entirely on our own understanding. That is particularly relevant when the road ahead feels uncertain. You may not know exactly where your career will take you in five or ten years. You may not have every answer before you make your next move.

But you can take the next step with God.

Pray about the opportunity. Seek wisdom. Consider how your decision will affect your faith, family, finances and ability to serve others. Then surrender the outcome to God.

Allowing Christ to guide your career does not mean that every decision will be easy or that every opportunity will work out exactly as you hoped. It means choosing to trust that God is present in the journey.

So, if you are standing at a career crossroads today, don't feel that you have to have everything figured out.

Bring your plans to God. Ask for wisdom.

And more importantly, listen for His direction.

Then, with faith and humility, take the next step.
