Losing your job can be one of life’s most unsettling experiences. Work provides more than an income. It gives us identity, purpose, routine and a sense of belonging. When it disappears, we can find ourselves asking difficult questions: What do I do now? Where do I go from here? And, as Christians, where is God in all this?
I believe that God is in transition. When one door closes, God can open another. We may not immediately see what lies ahead, and the uncertainty can be daunting. But the end of a job does not mean the end of our usefulness, purpose or contribution.
When I lost my job to redundancy, my coach reminded me that my position had become redundant but that I would not be redundant until the day I died. There is a world of difference between the two.
And that is an important distinction when redundancy threatens our confidence and sense of worth. We are not defined by the job we do. Our experience, abilities and gifts do not disappear when our employment ends. However, knowing this and putting it into practice are two different things.
Redundancy can leave us anxious, discouraged and unsure how to take the next step. We may need help putting together an effective CV, understanding how to uncover opportunities through networking, preparing for interviews, or deciding whether it’s time for a complete career change. When we find ourselves needing help to get through a career transition like redundancy, an outplacement coach can be a Godsend.
An experienced transition coach provides practical guidance, encouragement and an objective perspective when it is difficult to see a way forward. For Christians, career transition can also be an opportunity to reflect on our God-given abilities and consider how we might use them in the next season of our working lives.
You do not have to navigate this transition alone. Sometimes, having someone alongside you makes the difference between feeling overwhelmed by a closed door and finding the confidence and the perseverance to look for the door that is opening.
